The exciting, up-and-coming Poudre River Whitewater Park project is officially under construction! At Confluence Fort Collins, we couldn’t be more ecstatic for a recreational and restorational space along the city’s most coveted feature: the Poudre River. Much like our vision for Confluence Fort Collins, the Poudre River Whitewater Park is seen as “Old West meets New West,” due to the nature of the construction project.
The 150-year-old unused concrete berm known as Coy Ditch is finally being deconstructed to make room for the Poudre River Whitewater Park. The City of Fort Collins is working together with ECI Site Construction to rebuild a more environmentally friendly section of the river, using natural elements to create waves and challenging courses for kayakers and stand up paddle boarders alike. There will also be a section within the Poudre River Whitewater Park for spectators – young and old – to splash around in a safe and gorgeous environment.
Can you imagine spending the afternoon learning how to surf on a controlled part of the Poudre River in the middle of downtown Fort Collins? This dream will soon become reality with the completion of the Poudre River Whitewater Park, scheduled to finish in summer 2019.
ECI Site Construction began construction on the project on August 23, 2018 by carefully diverting the river in an effort to protect wildlife throughout the construction. The City and construction company are also working hard to preserve the water quality during the building process.
It doesn’t get more “Colorado” than having a kayaker’s dreamy whitewater park within city limits. More so, the Poudre River Whitewater Park will be located about a 5-minute walk away from Confluence Fort Collins! Just imagine walking out of Confluence Fort Collins, heading east to hop on the Poudre River Trail, and arriving at the Poudre River Whitewater Park in a matter of minutes. Even if you’re not into kayaking or surfing, this new recreational site will be a beautiful and peaceful spot to read a book or watch as kayakers train for the real ebbs and flows of river kayaking outside of city limits.
The Poudre River Whitewater Park will include wave features, river access, a splash pool, a pedestrian bridge, terrace stone seating areas, walkways, an overlook with shelter, a shoreline, and eventually restrooms.
